Maddy Stringer, born in Somerset, UK, is a recent womenswear design graduate from Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with a First Class BA Hons. At Graduate Fashion Week 2018 Maddy was selected as one of the top 25 designers and given the opportunity to exhibit her work at 3 catwalk shows. She was awarded runner up for the Catwalk Textiles award and was selected as 1 of 3 finalists for the David Band Textile award. She is now based in London, working with the fabric and trims team at Stella McCartney HQ.
Her specialism lies in textile and material development, exploring tactility and three dimensional surfaces for fashion. Her graduate collection took inspiration from the beauty in the mundane and the human compulsion to collect, focusing on her own childhood collections. Juxtaposing the traditional ornate patterns found in the miniature Persian rugs of her childhood doll's house with the bright, structured plastics of her hotel soap packet collection allowed Maddy to create unusual and unexpected surfaces that then informed her packet like silhouettes. Maddy’s collection draws on fascination with both degrees of scale and the cross-over from collecting to hoarding, expressed in an almost overwhelming weight of embellishment and embossed imagery. The finished collection demonstrates laborious textile techniques and a high level of craftsmanship.
